OK, so I blame PetCo for this. I set up my 24g aquapod in the corner of my living room, moved all the furniture and the entertainment center. Flipping PetCo puts their daggon tanks on sale so I just had to buy a 40 breeder. I built the stand but haven't painted or trimmed it yet. The only place it will fit is where the aquapod is now. I'm not trying to move a big tank, here. Is it crazy talk to think I can drain the 24 to about 3 inches of water so the fish can still, you know, live and immediately move it (with the help of another person) across the room then refill it? This isn't something I need to do like right now. I just want opinions on whether this may be possible. It makes sense in my head.

You should be good to move it.

Hey,

Me again with my NC 24. When I moved my 24 across town I drained it down to about 2.5" it left about 3/4" of water over the sand. I would not advise keeping fish in the tank while you move. The water instantly becomes a thick sandy mess - remember theres not a lot of water to dilute the sand cloud. I would bucket the fish - even moving across the room.

When refilling the tank I put a walmart sack down and then a glass bowl and slowly poured water into the bowl which spilled onto the sack. It really reduced the sand cloud. I let the water sit for about an hour to settle some and then I started putting LR and livestock back in it. Although if you kept the fish in the tank you would have to refill immediately.

Make sure to keep the tank level when moving.

The problem is that it's full of rock and corals. I really don't think I will ever get as lucky as I did setting up where EVERY coral just fit into place because of where they were already attached to rocks. I have a clown, clown goby and a yellow assessor in there. No way I can catch them without taking the rock out.

I just want to get it out of the way so I can start the cycle on my 40. Once that's all done with, I'll start moving livestock over. I'll have to frag most everything in the 24 since I don't really want any of that rock in the new tank. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I just have all new rock that I want to use. The only rock I plan on keeping from the 24 is the clowns hairy mushrooms that he has decided to host.

A 24 should only weigh a couple hundred pounds full of water. I would just drain it to about 3/4 full (so water does not slop all over your living room), invite some friends over and move it stand an all to the new location. (you are only moving across the room right?) Be sure to lift the stand, not the tank if you try and do it this way.....

Then you can treat it as a 25% water change and put in freshly made saltwater or pour the water back in that you took out.

Good luck with your move and contrats on the new tank.
