View Full Version : One Funky 150 Build!

well it is finally time to start showing what i have been slowly doing lately. actually the aquascaping was dont tonight with A LOT of help from Josh. thanks josh!!!! i was going for a minimalist approach. i used hydrolic wet stop concrete to assemble both mounds. i was looking for a more permanent set up, that was one thing i hated about my 90, that the rocks could shift. the total sytem is going to be a 150 display, 65 fun tank, 40 frag, 40 sump, 20 tall remote fuge. skimmer is going to be my own SRO 5000, kinda custom. lighting over the 150 will be 2 250 mh phoenix on icecap ballasts and 2 actinic supplements. 65 gal tank lighting is a 6 bulb t5, frag lighting is 1 250 watt se, fuge is 2 coil 6500k bulbs. there is one return pump for the 150, panworld 100px, and a coralvue 1260 external for the downstairs tanks. this is still going to be a slow build so photos may be a bit slow as well. i will have photos of the sump and stuff later on.

the mess midway through:

concrete that i used:

the tank:

my planned stocking list:

Achilles tang- i know i know, i love them!
blue star leopard wrasse
exquisite wrasse- either African or Vanuatu
one pair Watanabe angels
pair of onyx clowns
a bunch of random blennys/gobies- bicolor, midas, starry.
blue spotted jawfish
a school of something, not really sure yet. was thinking fathead anthias, or orange striped cardinals

this list will continually change, i am sure. it already has!:)

Looks like it is off to a good start! This sounds like a complex and interesting build. I will be watching and learning. :)

Like the overhang from the bunch on the left. I have found with mine as much as I love the fact none of my rocks can move it makes the urg to change things that much stronger. Good luck with everything....

Funky187

i didnt like that the rocks used to move on their own. i can see how not being able to re aquascape anything can get annoying though.

well it has been 4 weeks since it has had water in it, and for some reason it is acting like the cycle has completed. i had a large ammonia spike, but not a big spike of nitrites. i am going to confirm my results at work today and see if it is my tests kits. kind of half excited!

did you get the cement from sunbelt rentals by chance?

Sunbelt is where I got mine

Funky187
06-18-2010, 07:16 AM
lowes is where i got mine, it was like 20 for that size, and i have about 3/4 left.

blueroof
06-18-2010, 08:54 AM
Sounds like lowes is much better deal. The stuff I got at sunbelt was around $50 for a 40lb bag.

well, good news! the tank is now plumbed into the system!!!! i will try to take photos tonight.

DId you circulate the rock in RO/DI to leach out anything the hydro cement had to offer or should this not be a concern?

Funky187
06-24-2010, 07:29 AM
i have read alot of stuff about it, and from what i have gathered i dont need to worry about it mainly because i didnt use that much. i used about 3lbs in a 300 gal system. i did cycle the rock in the tank for 8 weeks before doing large water change. so far so good i haven't seen any issues yet. most of the people that need to soak in ro/di are making diy rock.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. Love those flasher wrasses, possible harem in the future? Also did your magnifica move to the top of the tall column or is that a different one? Looks nice up there either way. That is a pretty cool acclimation chamber as well. Nice stuff everywhere!

Funky187
03-01-2011, 05:22 AM
i think i am going to hold off on that. mainly because of the really poor survival rate. i am really looking into some sort of nice angel, blueline is top of the list right now.

Sorry, not all the photos are super clear but that is because I do not have an auto focus macro. That is something that I plan on getting soooooon. I am also adding a new fish tonight, an ember blenny! The only other fish I have that I did not photo is my magnificent rabbit, and I plan on bringing up my mandarin from my 65 once I find him a GF.

well i came home to a cloudy tank. and the results were not good. so far i have lost:
magnificent rabbit
chocolate tang
mc flasher wrasse
filliminted flasher wrasse

MIA:
midas blenny

prob going to die:
the mag anemone

what happened?
for some odd reason the mag anemone has been cruising around my tank a lot, mainly on the top of the large pilar of rocks. for some reason it decided to get really close to the powerheads, then got sucked in. gotta love this hobby!

to top it off my skimmer pump right now is sitting in slidell LA because it did not want to start back up. so skimmerless and a cloudy tank.

stuff that i see alive still:
my lonely clowns
melenurus wrasse
rainfords goby
tail spot goby

off to Mexican restaurant to have some GRANDE DOS EQUIS!!!!!!!

Man, that is tragic! Tyler let me know if there is anything I can help with, seriously. I have read that, apart from ammonia problem from a large die off, the nematocysts get ejected into the water column when an anenome gets chewed up in a pump, the fish breathe them into thier gills and die. The skimmer is probably taking them out but a water change would not hurt.

Here is a link to a thread about a guy who attempted to split a s. mertensii. Twenty minutes after returning the two halves to the tank all the fish, except the clowns, were dead.

The nem was looking like it was trying to heal. It is attached inside.my glass overflow. All the other fish seem fine now, time to start thinking about ways to prevent this in the future. As for restocking, I am probably going to go with similar fish and hope.for the best.

I keep thinking about cutting my Elephant mushroom. I'm not sure if there are any toxins associated with them. When I've put cuts on it hoping to encourage it to split itself it has what look like intestines and egg sacs that come out. But it is always fully healed within 24 hours.

I have decided to update the thread. The magnificent did wind up dieing. it healed up nice then moved right into another power head and that was the end of it. i have no intention to get another one, i am planning on going with several bubble tip anemones. they are really hardy and clowns typically dig them. i have not added much in the line of fish since i lost the list above. i did add a red sea sailfin. i have got my calcium reactor diled in, knock on wood. growth seems to be speeding up, and i am now really starting to look for some nice frags!
